The Greek word proskuneo is the main word translated as worship in the New Testament. It carries the same idea as the Old Testament Hebrew word, shachah (hawa in NIV).

It means to show honor, allegiance or homage to someone higher, a king, ruler or God. It is most commonly expressed in bowing, kneeling or prostrating, but these days, raising hands is the most favored bodily action.
