Mainline historical denominations experience the Baptism in the Holy Spirit
The Baptism in the Holy Spirit had been present in the Pentecostal churches for the first half of the Twentieth Century. Most churches from the historical denominations had looked with suspicion and ridicule on those who spoke in tongues.
But God had other ideas . . . .

Smith Wigglesworth, a British Evangelist, was ministering in South Africa in 1936, while staying with David du Plessis, the general secretary of the Apostolic Faith Mission. Smith looked straight into David’s eyes and began to speak in a way that was recognizable as a prophetic word.
“I have been sent by the Lord to tell you what He has shown me this morning," he began. "Through the old-line denominations will come a revival that will eclipse anything we have known throughout history. No such things have happened in times past as will happen when this begins.
“It will eclipse the present-day, twentieth-century Pentecostal revival that already is a marvel to the world, with its strong opposition from the established church. But this same blessing will become acceptable to the churches and they will go on with this message and this experience beyond what the Pentecostals have achieved. You will live to see thin work grow to such dimensions that the Pentecostal movement itself will be a light thing in comparison with what God will do through the old churches, There will be tremendous gatherings of people, unlike anything we've seen, and great leaders will change their attitude and accept not only the message but also the blessing.
“Then the Lord said to me that I am to give you warning that He is going to use you in this movement. You will have a very prominent part.
One final word, the last word the Lord gave me for you: All He requires of you is that you be humble and faithful under all circumstances. If you remain humble and faithful, you will live to see the whole fulfilled.”
David and Dale Garratt & Worship in the Nations
While leading praise and worship at a businessmen’s meeting, David sensed God speaking to him to lead the people to God, not just to get them to sing. It became a foundational principle for him as he began to teach and lead others in worship around the world.
Scripture in Song provided a valuable service to this new movement of praise and worship by producing song books and recordings. These resources helped spread the excitement of this new wave of worship in New Zealand and around the world.
David and Dale traveled the world teaching and leading praise and worship. God began to speak to them that God was wanting to release the sounds of worship from indigenous peoples who had often been prevented from using their cultural expressions in the Western-dominated churches. You can follow their story in the video on this page.
